513 Furlong Rd.
The Dierke Family farm is currently being cultivated by 3rd and 4th generation Dierke’s! The original farm was purchased by John and Emma Dierke in 1947 on Furlong Road. In 1954 James (John and Emma’s son) and Dorothy Dierke, their daughter in law, bought adjoining Furlong property and the farm expanded. In the early days apples, primarily Gravensteins and Pippins, were the mainstay of the ranch. The family leased a small roadside fruit stand on Bodega Highway and sold apples, apple juice that they made, vegetables from the garden, and local jams and jellies made by neighbors. Later, James bought the fruit stand and owned it through the 70’s. It still exists today, while not Dierke owned, under the name Bill’s Farm Basket. Furlong valley enjoys a unique micro climate: fog from the Bodega Coast ebbs and flows during the growing season, encouraging a moderate climate, one that does not promote burning of the various crops. The area is rich in artifacts from the Coast Miwoks and Southern Pomo Indians who lived and traded in the area. The ranch is bordered by Redwood Creek, where occasional salmon and steelhead still return yearly despite impediments from housing infill and poor land stewardship by some between the ranch and the Russian River where the creek terminates. Dierke Farm is a member of the California Farm Bureau. It has been certified organic by CCOF since 2005. John, who is a lymphoma cancer survivor, is most conscious about sound environmental and growing practices. He is a strong advocate for organic and sustainable agricultural practices. John works closely with Seeds of Change® Product Development Manager, Terry Allan, to test cool season crops like lettuces and other greens. Having taught research at the university level for more than 20 years, John states, “working with Terry Allan doing this investigative, applied research is fundamental to insure Seeds of Change® customers receive the finest product possible. I am proud to be a member of the Seeds of Change® extended family seed trial team.” Dierke Farm has been selling produce through Terra Sonoma/F.E.E.D. Sonoma since their inception!
